Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Review

Hey Friend, Star Trek V is like the perception of time after you consume marijuana. You feel like three hours have passed, but it’s only been fifteen minutes. It’s the longest, short Star Trek film (106 min.).

If we were to compare it to a stripper, Star Trek V would be the endearing grandma still shaking it, but instead of a show you get a cautionary tale whispered in your ear. While it’s not what you went to the club for, she’s never steered you wrong.

Out of the whole set, this will be your dustiest. It’s still worth a watch, if only for the daring storyline. I say this because the villain is highly sympathetic; it makes him barely a villain at all. The main antagonist, as I see it, does not show up until the very end. But that was kind of the point. Star Trek makes for a perfect vehicle to tell a story like this.

Once again, William Shatner shines in the film. The holy trinity of McCoy, Spock, and Kirk is in full theatrical mode. The new forward observation lounge, complete with a wheel as prominent as Kirk’s bravado, hosts a chunk of the scenes. They must’ve spent some money on it because it’s featured a lot.

Considering the brutal final scene compromises and the special effects that were rushed (not done by ILM), there is a lot of warmth and beauty to this film.

Most reviewers mention ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat’ song as the indication of where The Final Frontier went astray. I disagree. It’s corny, sure, but you have god, the devil, and a place in the center of the galaxy that’s as fantastic as a dream. So, ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat…’ bitch.

Star Trek V is a very unique, not quite on par with the first one, but still very much a Trek film.

  1. Nice one. Barely seen anyone being this “adventurous” with comparisons and things like that but hey, that’s a good thing. It makes it a better read. I guess I should give all the Star Treks a watch some day, my dad loves them especially the early ones.
